Starwood Retail Partners Announces Plano Children's Theatre, Reveals New Images for The Shops at Willow Bend

October 27, 2016

CHICAGO (October 27, 2016) - Starwood Retail Partners has announced the addition of Plano Children's Theatre to The Shops at Willow Bend in Plano, Texas, and released the architectural renderings of its $100 million renovation and expansion of the center, which will re-create the luxury mall into a multi-use property and a complete commercial core for North Dallas.

Scheduled to open in the spring of 2017, North Texas Performing Arts (NTPA) and its Plano Children's Theatre will include four performance spaces, six rehearsal spaces, a set build, and costume shop, occupying approximately 22,000 square feet on the upper level near Dillard's. The largest youth arts organization in North Texas, the NTPA provides arts opportunities for ages five to 18 years old with a mission of promoting lifelong learning, creativity, communication skills, teamwork, integrity and good citizenship. While the NTPA currently has offerings in Plano, McKinney and Frisco, Texas, the mall facility will become its new headquarters.

"We are humbled by the generosity and incredible support of The Shops at Willow Bend team and its parent Starwood Retail Partners," says Darrell Rodenbaugh, president of the NTPA Board of Directors. "This exciting move will allow us to double our reach and impact in the Plano community."

The agreement is an early highlight of the renovation and expansion of The Shops at Willow Bend, the first in the 15-year-old center's history. Plans call for the addition of a Class A office tower as well as new restaurant and retail concepts to the mall, says Scott Wolstein, CEO of Starwood Retail Partners.

"Plano has seen tremendous population growth, especially families with young children," Wolstein observes. "The addition of the Plano Children's Theatre is just the first of many new offerings that will turn The Shops at Willow Bend into the commercial and emotional core of North Dallas. And we're very excited to reveal renderings of exactly what our guests will see when construction is complete in 2018."

Located at 6121 W. Park Blvd., The Shops at Willow Bend opened in 2001; Starwood Retail Partners acquired the center in 2014. Highlights of the renovation include a welcoming new main entrance facing the Dallas North Tollway; a collection of up to eight chef-driven restaurants; a high-end health and fitness club; entertainment venues; and a seven-story, 200,000-square foot "Class A" office tower that can accommodate approximately 800 employees. The expansion also will accommodate new retailers and innovative adventures for families. The existing mall's interior will be remodeled throughout to reflect a more contemporary aesthetic. The new renderings of the project can be downloaded here.

Construction began in May 2016 and will be completed in phases, starting in mid-2017 and continuing through 2018. The first phase, to be completed in late 2017, entailed the demolition of the former Saks Fifth Avenue store, which will be replaced with a two-level open-air pedestrian plaza hosting up to eight chef-driven restaurants. Additional phases will include the construction of the office tower adjacent to the Dillard's anchor; a 30,000-square-foot fitness center across from Crate & Barrel; and a 50,000-square-foot family destination near Macy's. Starwood Retail Partners is finalizing negotiations with a local developer to build the office tower.

The center will remain open throughout construction. Its two levels feature more than 125 stores and restaurants, including Neiman Marcus, Dillard's, Macy's, Bath & Body Works, Crate & Barrel, Forever 21, Foot Locker, H&M, Anthropologie, California Pizza Kitchen and Sonic.
